The Dark Knight in particular has received universal acclaim, proving the genre is a successful one which would appeal to all age groups and almost all tastes. However, for our film opening we wanted to avoid what people would normally expect and instead opt for something new. We also started to veer off from the super hero genre towards the end of the production of this and changed it to a thriller but still used some of the conventions of a superhero genre such as a death at the start and narration.
For our piece to set it off we had the ordinary routine of a man having his breakfast in the morning, so the audience would tend to think that this character will now become the main protagonist however we start to make the audience question this because throughout the morning sequence you don't actually see his face. Again this is quite the contrast to most other films however this was slightly influenced by the introduction from kick ass as they have the same thing but it is narrated by the main character however the man you looks at is not him and he dies so it is that sort of shock thing we were influenced by.Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-42288978658101815082011-05-04T07:15:00.000-07:002011-05-04T11:11:18.107-07:00
Evaluation 6
Overall we were very lucky to have such a broad range of technologies available to us for starters we were aloud to use the one of the music track because i managed to email the manager as i found his address using the internet. The internet was a really big help as it meant that we could find lots of clips of films that had the similar idea that we wanted and we could use this to help others in the group understand how it could like, for example the quick editing we wanted to try and use in the breakfast scene is similar to the one in shaun of the dead's intro. So by being able share the information like this was very helpful towards creating our final product.

Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-83386155389201528272011-05-04T06:41:00.001-07:002011-05-04T06:51:32.496-07:00
The whole idea of not showing the characters face was so that you couldn't really put him into a class or him to represent a certain social groupso then that character would have a mysterious enigma about himself therefore sort of alienating our audience by niot letting them relate to the characters.Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-44928648195325691762011-05-04T05:26:00.001-07:002011-05-04T05:58:53.325-07:00
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A range of young males who have been reading comic books since they were younger. More than 90% of the readers of mainstream superhero comics are male (1995) so this is why we've mainly targeted it at males. Also people who have seen movies in a similar vein to our production such as ‘The Watchmen’, ‘Kick Ass’, ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ or ‘The Dark Knight’. Typically, 16-25 year old males would be interested in a fast paced action film.

We wanted the film to be darker and different from the now family orientated comicbook/super hero films. That part of the film isn't overpoweringly obvious.
The problem with the target audience for this style of film is that it's quite specific so we decided because to slightly change the storyline of the film to something more along the lines of an action thriller but at the same time have the protagonist possibly become a hero or villain so there is stilll that comic style element in it but this way we will be advertising to a larger audience. Also the good things about this genre of film is that most of the audience who like these types of films stereotypically use the internet alot of the time whether its games/Forums or buisness, it could still be advertised easily on the internet via certain websites, so by advertising to an audience like ours its worth knowing how to advertise the movie to them.Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-67994783373467611022011-05-04T04:55:00.001-07:002011-05-04T04:56:43.756-07:00Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? on Prezi

Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-79712483066475919992011-05-03T13:42:00.000-07:002011-05-04T00:14:27.179-07:00How Did You Attract/Address Your Audience?GoAnimate.com: How Did You Attract/Address your Audience by whiteisaac15

Like it? We used a high angle shot for this as we didn't want to see his face also we had the problem of trying to keep the film set in New York so we didn't want any of the grass on the lawn opposite of the drive in shot so this was quite an effective shot to use.

This problem of grass kept reoccuring in other shots outside Dan's house as we were trying to film the car drive round the corner so again we used a high angle shot to get rid of the grass line at the top of the shot.

We also decided to film most of the car shots on that street as well seeming as there was less traffic and therefore we could do the amount of takes we wanted. We played around with the idea of the car going past and the camera would have a view around head hight but then you could see the houses and lawns of the houses behind which could take away the sort of New York effect we wanted. So we ended up getting a really nice shot of the car going past by having the camera on the floor therfore it minimalized the rest of the street in view. Although this worked out well we had to do quite a few takes as we needed to get the speed of the car right because it actually went past the camera alot faster than it looked. After the car scene we then had to drive to Sophies Dad's apartment as it had the bathroom that we wanted in the opening sequence it may sound picky but it was perfect for the way we wanted to shoot our character getting ready in it. This shot was quite tricky as we of course had the mirror in front of him and we wanted to do an over the shoulder shot however the characters face was showing up in the mirror and so to get rid of this we boiled a Kettle and steamed up the mirror so you couldnt see the face and that way we would not have to do some un necassary complex editing on adobe after effects. After this we went back into ringwood outside my house to do the last of the car shots this time of dan getting hit by the car, and the way we did this was that we had Dan jump onto the front of the car to lok as though i had hit him at high speeds, we first tried this outside my house but then realized we got the reflection of the house in the windscreen so we then did it in the middle of the road which again worked out better but we had to make sure we only got the bottom of the windscreen so as not to see the grass on people's lawn. By having just the bare minimum of the windscreen

shown we also managed not to show the characters face again which was really quite lucky. We ended the day by finishing of some of the shots of him eating for the breakfast seen which went without a hitch.
Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-68687616260176254202011-05-03T05:37:00.000-07:002011-05-03T07:52:57.550-07:00Editing attempt 1After having our first shoot and getting most of the shots for the morning scene in the house we started to edit together our new york shots and the house shots to make our intro. Luckily we already had the music what we wanted as we had permission to use it from one of the bands. Anyway we started cut up the lengthy shots and fit them into eahc other and the rendering was what was taking the longest. During the editing we decided to have the new york shots start off the film intro to give it the sense of mystery which would then tie in with the title and theme the silhouette. To get the pace of the film started quite high we thought that by having sped up images basically very short time lapses at the start, then the audience would be captured straight away. Shortly after piceing the shots nof new york together we decided that to go in time with the music we would have the slow panning shots first and then the quick edits of the rest of new york to fit in time with the change of tempo and pace in the music.
The equipment we used was the usual cameras but we also had a microphone with us as we needed to capture certain sounds whilst filming the shots such as this shot we were filming the egg being cooked and we wanted the sizzling sound quite clear incase we wanted to play around with words saying sizzle coming out of it when we got to the editing part also that the sound of an egg sizzling generally helps set the time of morning with the rest of the shots.
The storyboard was also quite a good way of keeping track of what shots we had done and the ones we needed to do.

Whilst filming we had a few problems for example you could only hear what was coming through the microphone after you had started to record so we overcame this by adding a sound check on some of the takes. Another problem we encountered was that the tripod we had wouldnt reach the certain hights we needed for some of the kitchen shots eg looking down on the eggs so instead we had to just hold the camera very still and to be sure to have a good shot we took the shot three times so we could have a choice of some of the good ones. Overall the day was a success and we now had some footage that we could start to edit with the New York footage i had previously gotten on our media Trip.
Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-75395533249592082492011-02-09T02:55:00.000-08:002011-03-01T04:22:23.623-08:00Main task Developement-Music ResearchAt the start of our title sequence we have a time lapse with a narrator speaking over the top of it. For th we have a montage of film shots of new york and we realized that having some underline music it would give the scene more tension and build up towards an event. The music we chose is a song calle Smile by crystal method, we chose this song as the electric sounds of it make the scene feel modern and New which is the time period we are going for. This band is actually under a record label so in order to use their music i had to email the manager of the band , he did infact get back to me and gave me permission to use the music.
We also decided as a group that a time lapse sunset would be hard to film in New York as we dont have much time to do it, so as an alternative we are going to record a sunet in the open with no trees or buildings and then layer that recording behind the comic stylized shot of the new york buildings therefore retaining the sunset effect on the city and making the filming much less difficult.
Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-30318856378505844392011-02-09T02:24:00.000-08:002011-02-09T02:24:42.074-08:00Main task DevelopementIn our second lesson we started to write up a actual plan of the shots we wanted and to fine tune our ideas into something that we could actually accomplish in the time we have been given. On our A3 sheet we wrote down the shot sequence we wanted and where we could find information on it aswell. For example for the latter half of our opening sequence we have alot of shots in quick succession of each other like In The movie Shaun of the Dead. These shots are exactly what we want as for the audience watching it keeps the fast pace from the time lapse at the start and gives a false sense of normality before the twist at the end of the sequence. We also decided that we would have four to five of the shots in our sequence changed into the comic type look as anymore would have been to much a task for our group to handle in the time given.Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-88009628706074148912011-01-24T00:02:00.000-08:002011-01-24T00:09:08.103-08:00Film Brief and Main Task Idea'sFor the main task we were given film brief's and we had to chose which one we would like to do, my group chose to do film brief one, which is to do an action film with a target audience of 15-25 year-olds, it also has to have the style of a hero comic as well. My group has Chris, Tom, Sophie and myself in it which should make getting the finished product done a lot easier as more people can take on more roles. Most of us chose this film brief because it lets you do a lot creativity wise such as creating a hero and bringing him to life, also the fact that throughout our film we want the use of live animation in some parts which is useful as chris is very good at animating and sophie is really good on Photoshop. For the live action shots tom will be good on the camera as i have no doubt he will have great input into what works best. Together i think our team has everything covered.

So once we had decided to do film brief one we instantly started coming up with lots of ideas. In our first lesson on this we came up with the idea that it should be a comic hero something along the lines of Batman: Dark Knight story line but with a possible twist at the start to make it a bit darker as for the older viewers. So talking over the whole comic book feel we thought it would be a good idea to have the start of the film looking at a comic book (which we wanted to make on the computer) and we wanted the camera to pan along the comic book reading it and then when necessary we would use the first shot of a piece of live action film we wanted to go in, and turn it into a comic looking picture, and then graphic match it onto the start of the real live footage. We would repeat this a few times before we got to the ending and throughout this we wanted a narrator to be talking the whole way through. The inspiration for this was from many movies but the one i thought of was the intro to kick ass as it had the narration and the first twist at the start with the person we thought was a hero dying. This intro is along the line that we want.
Obviously when shooting most of our shots we gave extra time either side so when it came to editing we could get the continuity editing to a tee however when we were filming on of our shots there was a fade setting that had been turned on, so the camera had a natural fade in and out at the start of one of our shots this meant that we had to cut it out as most of it was missed because of the fade. Withe the editing we only used a few effects on adobe such as giving it a fade to black at the end and we also decided to make the whole film black and white because it gave it more a sense of tension and of curiosity about what's going on. For us this still wasn't enough so we set about searching over the internet for soundtracks and we looked at a few but we did not like them until we found a whole sound track that suited our film to a tee and as soon as we put that in we realized that it made our movie a lot better and more believable as an audience. We also gave adobe after effects a go to make a moving title sequence however it was very slow to render on our computer and when we got it to finally render as it was completing our computer decided to reset it's self so with the time we had left we thought we would just add an ordinary title to the start and overall it came out quite well.Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-61442544801281615882010-10-19T14:44:00.000-07:002010-11-29T06:50:30.908-08:00Production

As soon as we had our storyboard finished we started off getting ready for the filming. We set up the tripods for the camera's and the camera's themselves and went to the scene of our first shot. because of not having enough time in the lesson to get all the shots done we decided to do all of our outside shot's on the same day so as not to get different weather conditions and lighting it would be to much hassle and it worked out quite well seeming as our first and last shot sequences were outside so getting them done was useful so we could work on the other shots not as hurried as we could have been. Overall the filming went quite well as we did not have many disturbances, we did want to experiment with our shots so we used the wheels on the bottom of the tripod so we could have our tracking shot. This had to be done at least three times as it is hard to judge the speed the character is walking at and to keep their face in the same frame area of the camera shot. I also think we planned our shot reverse shot speaking scene quite well as we decided that the best way not to muck up positioning was that the actors just stayed in the same spot and we moved the camera around them. For our speaking shots we used a microphone which we had a few troubles with at first as we could not find the right boom arm clip and the headphones didn't work, but in the end we managed to find a microphone that fitted the clip and some half working headphones so we managed in the end. Also we found that we needed to add in some extra speaking shots which we didn't have on the storyboard as we wanted to have an extra shot in the conversation so a to get a view of both the characters faces rather than only seeing one of the faces, it also gave it more a sense of reality as you could finally see that they were both stood there interacting. To start off with we all had a pretty vague idea that the theme f the short clip would have the element of fear and surprise, but also a sense of mystery as you do not end up seeing who is following the character's. So with this idea in mind we started to design our story boards which we drew the pictures of the shots we anted and then we annotated them for example when we had a close up shot we wanted it because it could show the anxiety and tense expressions on our characters face. We also wanted to have a few high angle shots like a cctv camera however we knew we would not be able to have the equipment to get to the height we needed so instead we planned other shots to give the same effect. I think we had some good points in our storyboard as we were lucky as a group to have one of our members to be quite good at drawing depth perception and scenes so we didn't have any trouble putting our visualizations onto paper, and we annotated them like i said the way we would want the audience to feel and how they would interpret the shot. However i don't think we tool into account that we might have needed to add more in as we just stuck with our first storyboard so next time we might go back over our storyboard and see if we can add things in there rather than having the trouble of thinking of what more to do when filming. During the design of the story board we found ourselves going to the places where we were going to shoot a recce so we could get a real sense of what it looked like so when we drew a shot we good easily see the shot when we came to shoot it whether it would be a tracking shot or a close up. In the process of making the storyboard we had to make sure we were following certain rules before drawing our shots for example on our conversational shot reverse shots we made sure that we sticked to the 180 degree rule and also when doing one of our first drawing's of the start shots we thought it would be good to get a different view on the same area so we had two shots quite close in each others view but again we followed the 30 degree rule so the shots weren't to similar.

This is our group coming up with the shots on our storyboard where we also wrote the captions for what the shot was meant to mean, chris was our artist as he has very perceptive ways of drawing so he can give the drawing depth.

Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-86090958519085543202010-10-15T01:43:00.000-07:002010-11-29T06:51:09.728-08:00Brief of Preliminary TaskWe were given our first task which involved us using the skills we have learnt so far. First we had to make a storyboard for a short film trailer of any genre and then we had to go film it. We were in groups of three and we filmed it in our school. Once we finished filming we are going to have to edit the film and all the shots we used using continuity editing. In our film we had to include certain shots such as, Shot, Reverse shot, match on action, and Close up shots.Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-86762466300891398212010-10-15T01:34:00.000-07:002010-11-29T06:53:13.006-08:00Media Help
This is a useful website i have found to help with my media and have shared with the other groups-http://www.mediacollege.com/
Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-9006565496483776622010-10-15T01:33:00.001-07:002010-11-29T06:54:02.760-08:00A Wide shot image

Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-36929000720369765462010-10-15T01:32:00.001-07:002010-10-15T01:32:49.749-07:00Various camera shots and Techniques
I have just learned a wide variety of different types of shots that are used during filming. To me this was really usefull as I like films and when i watch them i try to imagine why the camera is doing what it is doing and now that i know what some of these shots are and why they are used I can understand the films abit more and the director. These are just some of the shots I learnt about:
Cross cutting- actions are linked so you can go back in time from something that someone is possibly reminiscing about and you can go back to that time period as well, it is a very smooth transition.
Cut In- Cut Away: Usually from a distance shot to a close up like having a shot of a car in a car park and then going inside the car. The conversation could start before the shot goes into the car.
Dissolve- Where the current shot blends into the next one so the transition is really smooth.
Establishing/Re-establishing shot- This is when you are have a shot on someone and then you keep the shot on the person but it shows the rest of the scene so it still has the person in the frame but is re-establishing the area.
Eye line Match- Is a shot that makes the audience know where they are actually looking at so for example if someone was looking at a picture it would show here staring and then what she was looking at and then you might have a close-up of what the object of the stare is to show precision of what the person is looking at.
Shot/Reverse shot- this is when if someone is talking you would see a woman talking to the other man and then vice versa the woman still talking to the man but from the man’s side of the view.
Graphic match- is when two shots are joined together and the first one has same size shape of the object in the second shot that they can fluidly join together.
Wide Shot-The person takes up the full frame, or at least as much as comfortably possible.
Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7999305242273597108.post-83886664181808032822010-10-15T01:31:00.003-07:002010-10-15T01:31:56.581-07:00Greetings
Hi i’m Isaac I am taking media at AS level in ringwood school. So far we have learnt different techniques about filming such as the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is applied to filming which means that when filming or taking a picture if you take the picture looking at them head on it seems boring and unreal however if you use the rule of thirds you imagine a grid on what your are looking at(a 3×3 grid)and if you position the object on the lines the picture or film has more depth and interest.
Isaac Whitehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16505301084387219530noreply@blogger.com0
